Our one-week language immersion camp at the Huescan Pyrenees

Last term, 24 2nd year ESO students and their teachers Sílvia Cañadell and Eva García spent a week in El Pueyo de Jaca, a village in Huesca, on the Pyrenees, 1090 metres above sea level. We all stayed at Quinta Vista Alegre, which although it was an old 19th century summer palace it really had it all (including a ghost!).

We took part in this language immersion program thanks to a scholarship we had applied for in June, awarded by the Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte. As intended by this program, we learnt and spoke English in a natural environment as beautiful as the Pyrenees, always accompanied by native monitors from various English-speaking countries, who taught us many new words and expressions, together with games and activities that were really fun. We also took part in workshops where we learnt how to make bracelets and notebooks out of recycled natural materials, to tie-dye our T-shirts, to play parts in short plays in English, and to produce stunning dream-catchers. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our monitors, who taught us so many things (and put up with us so well!): Alex, Amy, Connor, Caroline, Chloe, Ellie and Gabrielle.

Apart from everything we learnt that week, another experience that we found very enriching was sharing the house and the activities with students from IES San Agustín de Guadalix, a town from Madrid. Although they were our age, at first we found them very different from us and we thought we wouldn’t get along, but then we became friends and now we miss them very much! We are very proud to have lived all those once-in-a-lifetime experiences with them, especially moments as unique as our 4-hour trekking excursion to the town of Panticosa, through lush forests, beautiful waterfalls, wooden bridges and steep slopes, and the dance organised for us by our monitors on the last night of our stay at el Pueyo, a night that was full of fun and magic. The next morning it was very difficult for us to pack up and set off for Santa Coloma, after saying good-bye, some of us with tears in our eyes, to the monitors and our new friends from Madrid.
